August: Sunset in Stitches, A Bargello Bookmark for Late Summer Days

This month, we’ve stitched the sky into canvas. Using the bold rhythm of Bargello embroidery - also  known as Florentine stitch — we’ve created a bookmark that glows with the colours of a summer sunset: yellow, orange and red,  gently dissolving into a soft, light blue — sea or sky, depending on how you see it.

This little bargello bookmark captures that peaceful moment, stitch by stitch, using just what’s needed, reflecting a thoughtful, sustainable approach to making.

Sunset in Stitches Bargello Bookmark Pattern

Materials Needed

Plastic or needlepoint canvas measuring at least 22 squares wide to fit the pattern (we used 28)
Tapestry wool in four shades: yellow, orange, red, and pale blue
A blunt tapestry needle
Optional: felt or fabric for backing

Instructions

Using the chart provided, begin from the bottom edge of the canvas to locate where your first stitch will go using the straight bargello stitch (up and down in a vertical line) to create the design.

Your bookmark can be as long as you like — just repeat the pattern until it feels right for you. We used three repeats for ours, but you can add more (or fewer) depending on the size you prefer or the thread you have on hand.

Add a border by making a stitch inside each hole around all four edges of the bookmark.

Maker’s Prompt

How could you adapt this pattern? Try different colours to create dawn, dusk, or even an abstract rainbow…we have changed ours, can you spot the difference?

Imagine this as a larger project. Could these suns become part of a cushion, a wall hanging, or a bag?

Coming Up

Our Bargello Bookmark Workshop is happening this September! We’ll be exploring the rhythm and colour of Bargello in person, with all materials provided.
