September: a postcard for the season

September is the season of gentle beginnings — when the first hints of autumn invite us indoors to make and mend. This month, we’re celebrating the beauty of scraps and leftovers with a simple, creative project: the fabric postcard.

Made from odds and ends, each postcard becomes a small stitched story. It’s easy, personal, and a perfect way to mark the season. You can keep your postcard as a handmade keepsake, tuck it into a journal, or send it through the post to someone special…even to yourself!

Fabric Postcard Pattern

What You’ll Need

  • Fabric scraps in autumn colours

  • Buttons, lace, small embellishments

  • A piece of firm fabric, a cardboard or a blank postcard (approx. 10 × 15 cm)

  • Needle and thread or a sewing machine

  • Glue (as an alternative to stitching)

  • Scissors

Instructions

Begin with a base: layer your chosen scraps on the firm fabric, arranging them until the colours and textures feel right. These can be stitched down with straight or zigzag stitches, or simply held in place with some glue. Finally, attach the front to a card backing and zigzag or overstitch around the edges to keep everything secure.  Leave the back plain for writing, or decorate it with collage, washi tape, or a favourite stamp.

Reflective prompts from Jess, the maker of our card

  • Choose one scrap of fabric that carries a memory — from an old shirt, curtain, or project — and let it become the centre of your postcard

  • Write a few lines on the back about what September means to you this year

  • Imagine sending your postcard to yourself a year from now — what message would you want to read?

Don’t forget to share your project on our social media!!
